smirnon - August 5, 2006 05:56 AM (GMT)
hi, how often do you all do a full service of your bike? how much does it cost?
recently my bike has been making alot of noises, about 3 months of usage only! don't know if it's due for servicing...

It depends on the rider, and to some small extent, the bike components. But as a rule, if you are a hard rider and a very regular one, have your bike checked regularly for such things as wear and chain stretch, say every 6 months? But then again, it depends but I would like a bike in tip top condition, lest it fails at a time when it is least unexpected.

smirnon- it really depends on your amount of usage, how hard u ride etc...
but if u have noises on yuor bike, you can troubleshoot yourself, more gratifying to do minor repairs and servicing to your bike. most likely areas which wld contribute to your noise:
seatpost/seat clamp area. make sure that your seatpost is greased. also seatclamp, take out clean properly, and regrease it, and make sure u tighten properly. u can also grease the inside of the seatclamp to protect ur frame's paintwork and also to reduce friction and noise.
cockpit area - usually headset/stem/handlebar area. u can do minor servicing by removing teh headset, pack the screws with grease, and retighten them on teh handlebar. headset - may contribute to the noise if the bearings are not lubed/greased properly.
bb area = also possible, but this one better go to ur lbs to do.
try the above and see if there is still noise.
also, you shld clean and relube ur chains every 2 weeks or so, to reduce weating of your chain rings, and casettes. clean esp the jockey area which always tend to collect alot of grit and dirt.
when lubing = use a good brand that the lbs recommend, and lube the inside of the chains. try to keep the outer part of the chain free of lube, to keep grit attraction on ur chain to a minimum.
otherwise, u can go to the lbs to do the full service.

greasing the seatpost really helps the noise issue? im reluctant to put grease on it... what if it slides down?

1) Yes a clean seat tube, seat clamp & seatpost with a bit of grease does help reduce noise.
2) If it slides down change a new FRAME. :hehe:

i don't see how seatpost and all can make noise leh, not moving parts!

Grease on seatpost is for easy removal and also to prevent corrosion from water, but never put grease on Carbon seatpost !!!
If seatpost slips, it may not be tighten enough..but do not overtighten. if tighten still slips, check seatpost size and seat tube size.

they can make minute movement which results in creaking.
