Title: powdercoating sus fork's lower legs and crown
Description: any issues?

dan-ah-pek - September 29, 2007 01:20 PM (GMT)
I read that for powder coating, there is this curing process that makes the powder 'melt' onto the paint. but would it be safe to let a suspension fork's magnesium lower legs go through the curing process as it invloves heating?

same goes for the crown, but i know most are made of steel or alu so shouldnt be much of an issue.

want to know would there be any issues sending magnesium lower legs for powdercoating. :thanks: :)

magnesium stuff should be able to be powder coated, since the oven just bakes the powder at around 200 degs C, not high enough to initiate combustion since there is no direct flame.

from http://physchem.ox.ac.uk/MSDS/MA/magnesium.html

the flash pt of magnesium is around 634deg C, so its well above 200degs.

Should be okay, but to remove the previous paint/finishing, you have to either sandblast, or paint remover yourself. Quite troublesome if you ask me.

so there is really no issues to send aluminium and magnesium stuffs to powdercoating ya?It won't affect the mechanical properties like weaken it ya?

To be on the safe side, maybe you should consult Sulaiman at The Rebound Centre

best is dont powder coat. Add alot of weight and the coat will crack.

Yea sulaiman oso recommend dun powdercoat. cuz the paint is a little bubbly due to corrosion. i dun dare to peel paint not to see how serious it is :hehe: . think ill just remove the pain myself and do a simple rattlecan spray when i can spare the time.
