Title: Wheel truing
Description: Need recommendation

slyfoxlover - February 13, 2008 12:59 PM (GMT)
Are all bicycle shops able to do wheel truing and repairs, or are there any shops you guys can recommend? My front wheel got bent in an accident, and now it looks like a potato chip. Hope you guys can help. Thanks.

potato chip abit hard to repair leh. I service my bike at T3 at Siglap. basically every bike shop should do servicing.

maybe u can state which area u stay in for the reccomendations..

just do take note if the wheel is bent beyond the tru-ing, you might have to replace the wheel..

yep. they are correct.
Say Onn Trading in tampines.. i've seen them true-ing back a pretty bad potato.
but like what the others said, if it's too serious... get a new pair of rims.

I second Say Oon. Nice chap and good wheel-skills too.

Say Onn is a good choice for wheel truing.

if you are more particular on the wheels, try bike labz.

3 admins have spoken. it's your choice.

Nope.
SayOon is the best.No doubt bout it.All my wheels built by him and i am in no way a smooth rider. Not even one broken spoke!
On the exterior, the shop may not look fanciful but his skills is by far the best i've seen!

no doubt about adenan as well. he is bike labz. check our LBS forum.

Say Oon has my vote too. been visiting him since '99, and he knows alot..

i have some experiences with other LBS where when its abit spoilt they reccomend to change this and that. some LBS in tampines, even bent one of my spokes and never highlighted it out to me.

but Say Oon will work out your components to the max. for me the budget rider, its great to have the uncle around.

oh yea, he does one of the best gear tune-ups in tampines. look out for the second hand items on his glass shelf when ur there too.

and for the GT riders who need replacement deraileur hangars, he has a stock of it too. Damn hard to find in SG.

can i ask you all something
what exactly do yall mean by building wheels, like building specific wheels just for certain type of riding?
can anyone give me example?
and does 'building wheels' appeal for MTBing/trailing too?

Donny - February 15, 2008 02:49 PM (GMT)
lime, just a reminder. he may have no stock for spokes. if u need to build, do give him a call, or probably you will need to leave your wheels for a day.

what kind of lacing.. 4x, 3x or no crossing at all
umm how tight the spokes are
a lot of differences in wheel building it actually gets kinda complicated..

truing is easy tho.. i true my wheel on a daily basis since im so unsmooth at riding haha

Azharfigo90 - February 16, 2008 04:35 AM (GMT)
I say wheelbuildind is an art.You may be really damn good in the other stuff but damn sucky when building wheels.Yes i agree there is many shops that CAN build wheels.Quality, well is another matter.Even i can build wheels but would it last?
Ultimately is your choice.I tune my rims at a fortnightly basis or when needed.

SayOon built all my wheels.Nothing but perfect.BUT this thread aint about SayOon,i swear by em cause i always go there, another fella may frequent SCH(For example) and also would say SCH is the best.So yea,do wadeva is comfortable to u.

Oh yea never do straight lace, ahhahaha. The spokes would just come out by itself.LOL.

Yangster - February 16, 2008 08:47 AM (GMT)
can try l&t winson... saw him building many wheels and also many people who request for him... but got to queue haha..

script GT - February 16, 2008 09:42 AM (GMT)
just curious.. winston is the only one that build wheels at LNT right? even if u drop it off, at the end of the day its him that builds it right?

Yangster - February 16, 2008 12:02 PM (GMT)
ah boon, another mech, also learning. But i think so many ppl find winson for wheel building has a reason behind. haha. I see him build up wheel and true them very professional... for durability, not sure? but it shud be good since so many riders come back and request for him only..

rgy1993 - February 16, 2008 12:49 PM (GMT)
oh yah another good builder is benson cycles at toa payoh lorong 5
i built my back wheelset there.. taken the abuse of me (a 100kg elephant riding) and already about 2 spokes broken but the wheel stays strong..

alano - February 17, 2008 06:28 AM (GMT)
The best wheelbuilder, in my opinion, is Ram from Attitudebikes. He seldom builds wheels now. He is the only wheelbuilder I know that tensions every spoke to make sure it is uniform. If it is not, he will ask you to come back in a couple of weeks time. I asked him why and he said, "I have a reputation to protect" He will not let the wheels out of his shop till he is satisfied. His services do not come cheap but they are worth it. And he always asks you to come back to check the tension. Part of his excellent after-sales service.

Another one is Adenan. He has built a few wheels for me. I went to him because he has a special heavy gauge spoke that I use for BMX wheels sets, specially made by DT. A nice guy who is also a great friend of mine, he will get the job done.

script GT - February 17, 2008 07:08 AM (GMT)
Ram has a fierce reputation la, most street riders i talk to reccomend him also..

i think after sales service is very important la.. nowadays so many bike shops to choose from, so many forums giving different opinions, and different riders looking for different things in service..

at the end of the day, find somewhere ur comfortable, someone u can trust and he should be able to do a good job.. the best learn things urself, so that u can gauge for urself i guess..
