Title: Stripping the bike!
neverquit - April 20, 2008 12:34 PM (GMT)
hello to all!
It has alarmed me that as a rider that rides the tampines trail at least 2-3 times a week and doing 2-3 rounds of the 10km route at a time, it is very expencive for me to continue going on to a bike shop AFTER EVERY SINGLE RIDE!!
and also that the fact that knowing how to strip my own bike myself would prove much vital as a trails rider where things on my bike could just break apart anytime.
so ill get to the point!
is there anyone out there who could teach me some basic dismantling tools such as dismantling my wheel, removing my discs, and even better, to open my sealed BB ? [ this is especially important as i realise a lot of shit tend to end up inside]
thanks for reading, and hope to hear from yall soon! thanks!

u'll need specifc tools for stripping certain parts.
u need not go to bikeshop after every ride. Let's ride together some days & i'll give u some tips on what to take note of.

Usually i will only remove the wheels to clear of the mud and sand from hidden areas, rinse the rotor with clean water, degrease the chain, lub it back when it's dry then thats it. :beardance:
stripping off parts to clean seems more like a major servicing done once a year (:secret: i don even send my bike for service until there is a need to eg. parts not running smoothly or falling apart. yeah i know, my LBS hates me :knock: cos i hardly reappear after purchasing my bike)

My LBS hates me cos i reappear at their door step at least once or twice every 2 weeks L0L
yes that LBS mech blamed me as if i was a shit bag by not paying them to do an overhaul after every 3wks to a month
like what the heck, i bought the GT as a trails bike not a - im gona take it to the park with my mum - or something .. and he blamed my maintainance skills when he saw the sealed BB with a lot of crap inside --->> WTH?!!?!
From this experience i learned la .. Tay cycles or any of their brothers or sisters should not be trusted; period. :D
oh thanks johnny! ill try real hard to see whether i can squeeze through my schedules for sunday.. (=

correct me if i am wrong :knock: BB = Bottom Bracket ? if so, it's suppose to be tighten right ? Crap as in lime green color grease or watery oily grease muddy stuff ?
the only way water/ crap can get in is usually from the seat tube ... hmm, curiousity really kills the cat ... pls share :secret:

JUST to all .. my experience at LNT today
just yesterday, when i went to TCH to complain about rear D problems about the accuracy of shifting, and irregular performance
the mech went for a test ride.. did a few casual checks and then told me off for my maintainance skills, and also to tell me the main thing which was that i had to get a new set of wiring/cables for my REAR D .. i was very down as i was just about to go trails and i expected that cable stretch [ the problem which he identified for me] could be easily solved.
Apparently, when i went home, feeling very angry at the performance of my bike, i decided to give LnT a shot as i guess their more well known
guess what, just as yangster had forseen, they could fix it!
Ah boon fixed my rear D and of course got a few lousy and noobish problem whines from me which he plainly rejected and just fixed it up for me ..
he stripped every single component of the rear D cabling from taking out the rubbers and what not, regreased etc etc etc. did a few cable cuts to shorten it and all.
Within a period of 20 minutes, the problem was solved, gearing was smoother then before but of course a few gearing down problems but other then that - perfect
He charged me $3 and i was extremely shocked!!! i thought it was gona be like 5 or 10.
anyways, adds to my point! Not is Tay cycles just a rude and arrogant bunch .. it shows that they arent very professional themselves to have such a prideful front. :knock:

Ah Boon is one a of mechanic out there who is willing to learn and help out ppl. I know him from playing Tamiya/Metal Car. Tay is more on High end bike.. Their Target is only Ang Moh & High End Bike. When come to responsiblilty seldom they can be trusted. As for other bike shop i no comment.. Some Thing Are just ment to be keep in the dark.

A little of off topic....
Adding injury to insult, there was once when I was told to have all the spokes
changed when I want to change one of my hub even though the spokes
were almost brand new (just change few months ago in another bikeshop).
This is just another ridiculous way of providing their kind of customer service.
Of course I gave an excuse that I will have it changed once I have the time.
While in another LBS the mechanic told me to come early in the morning and
collect my bike later in the early evening for replacing the old hub with a new
one and putting back all the original spokes back.

Depending on how much you ride, you may want to send your bike for servicing every 6 months. As for tools, Johnny is right. You may have to invest in a few like a BB tool to take out your BB. A word of advice...when the guy at the bikeshop services your bike, watch him and learn. That is how I did many years ago.
BBs can be a *censored* to clean. That is why I use BMX cranks on all my bikes. Their BBs last longer and are relatively easy to take out and clean.

Since i've started riding,i've always been the tech kinda guy.
I learnt repair skills through friends, mechs and the internet.
I've invested in a few 'special' tools like BB Tools and the likes.
I like parktools alot, their tools are awesome.
The repair help at the parktool webby is really useful too,not forgettin' Sheldon Brown(May God Bless His Soul).
