Title: New to Singapore
Description: Local MTB riding info
RubesNZ - May 5, 2008 03:28 AM (GMT)
Hi. I have recently moved to Singapore and just wanting to find out some general info on the best places to ride. I have an all mountain MTB and like most types of track. I am an average skilled rider but my fitness is a bit slack at the moment due to not being out on the bike for a few months. Also thinking that it will take longer to come back until I get used to the heat of Singapore. I originate from New Zealand but have lived in London for the last 6 years.
I have a few questions.....
1. Are there any organised rides for around the local trails
2. How do most people get to the tracks. I am used to driving for an hour to the trails, but i don't have a car here and if I rode in the heat from where I live (near Lavender MRT) to Tampines, I would probably be too knackered to enjoy the track (or does it just look a long way on the map). Also, you could take bikes on the Trains and Tube in London, but they aren't allowed on the MRT.
3. Which are the best tracks, from what I have read it appears to be Tampines and the Bukit Timah area.
4. Can anyone recommend a good bike shop local to the Lavender MRT station.
Cheers

My opinion:
1. You should cycle to the tracks, it'll help pump up your fitness again.
2. Many bike shops in the tampines area.
3. You can try riding at pulau ubin too. it is an off-shore island within singapore territory.
4. Sgcycling does organise group rides once in a while, though i haven't joined any of them.

Best place for a newbie in singapore is to visit tampines trail first as it is the easiest course in singapore; its about XC. but not one bit hardcore, just that some may think that the mud you come out with is not worth it for the trail itself.
Bukit timah, leave it for the next buddy, you dont wana rush in to a trail like that. Although i havent been there myself; if heard about many dangerous parts of the trail and many serious injuries being occured there.
Pulau ubin; try to conquer Tampines first.
If you are dropping by to tampines trail; gime a call at 92291973 [im aloysius] if you want a guide through the trail-> dont mind that im a slow rider XD.
I know a trusty LBS in tampines, LnT but not any in lavendar .. mmm.
And yes as what the above fella said; srijblm; cycle to the tracks, it'll raise your fitness
DOnt worry about being too tired. because trust me, the first time you do the trails, you wont enjoy it much because you'll be both tired [ even if you drove there] and find it pretty challenging in a way [ at least i do .. LOL]
Hope you enjoy singapore's biking community! :towelcheer:

singapore is small unlike other countries.
you can ride to any trails but you have to know the route.
you can take cab if you want
imo, when average rider from other countries come to singapore, usually they will find the trail too easy. so i think you can dont bother about tampines trail
try ubin, bukit timah and kent ridge.
lavender is near hup leong at chinatown. not exactly very near.
just about 5km away.

in your country, you drive for an hour but in singapore, you ride for an hour or less. the most 2hrs.

Hi.
Thanks for the info.
The idea of riding to the track was just new to me, but remembering that it is easy to cover the km's on the smooth surface of the road means it won't take that long.
Will do a few rides round Tampines over the next few weeks to see what it is like.
Hopefully when I find a job, it will be one I can bike to each day for fitness too. Guess I should be making the most of nit working at the moment to increase biking time.
Cheers for the info.

Please do take note of high bike theft rate in sg. Do not leave ur bike unattended. Keep it within sight.
