The History of Singapore Cycling Forums
The formation of the Administrative Council
SGcycling.org started as a venture by a couple of friends who decided that they wanted to do something to contribute to the sport that they enjoyed. The friends, who eventually went on to form the Administrative Council of Singapore Cycling Forums are Alano, Donny, Johnny, Sendoh, Zhiming and Preacher.
During the initial meeting, the Council decided almost immediately that the membership for the members of the Singapore Cycling Forums would be and always be free of charge. This also applied to merchants who were interested in signing up with the forums. This created a hub in which cyclists and merchants had the opportunity to share information, feedback and also get a good grasp of what the general community of cyclists in Singapore needed.
Our Goal
The goal of the website was to support the cycling scene, and to nuture a esprit de corps amongst the cyclists in Singapore. The forums were designed in such a way whereby members could interact with other cyclists around Singapore and around the world. It was this same vision that all the members of the Administrative Council shared throughout the planning and execution of the website that made what Singapore Cycling Forums is today: A community whereby each individual could learn from others, and in turn impart their knowledge to others. A community fueled by the passion for the sport, where each individual is a contributor to the sport.
A community created by cyclists, for cyclists.
The Blueprint
The website was slated to be launched for membership applications a month after the forums were set up. Throughout the entire three to four weeks, the Administrative Council scoured the Internet and various cycling related magazines in hope of finding valuable information and resources that would add value to the membership. Given the diversed nature of our sport, all disciplines were given a fair share of spotlight in the news forums. Industry news and breakthroughs in cycling technologies were also a main feature. It was also during this time whereby the Administrative council tried using the forums and ironing out the bugs and other technical issues that might affect our members.
Creating an Identity
With the initial membership sign-ups, feedback was passed around the Administrative Council and many themes were adopted, new forums were set-up almost immediately to cater to our ever evolving sport. In the following month, a marketing plan came into action: Singapore Cycling Forum decals were created and distributed to cyclists around Singapore for free, followed by the creation of the Singapore Cycling Forums Dri-Fit tee shirts. Staying true to the concept of giving back to the society, Singapore Cycling Forums sold their tee shirts at the same price they got it for, at no additional profit. The initial sell thru of 50 units were sold out almost immediately.
On and Off the Road ahead
Growing from strength, Singapore Cycling Forums' Administrative Council organised rides that brought members closer. From there, the Singapore cycling Forums participated in the annual Ride of Silence and the Pulau Ubin / Tampines XC trails Mass Ride, as well as the Yishun "Free and Easy" Trail ride. Works are underway for cycling clinics catered specifically for the diversed disciplines.
Facts and Figures
Accurate as of the 1st of July 2006, Singapore Cycling Forums had a total number of 339 members, with an average of 2.5 new sign-ups per day. 25 forums ranging from discipline specific to the classified cater to our members everyday, with an average of 3 topics started each day and reply generations of up to 40 on average.
Gratitude and Acknowledgements
Here, the Administrative Council would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every individual that made this website possible, and to the support that the scene has given us.
