It might not be anything new but i just want to share something that i've learnt today.
One of the good ways to wash the residue that will usually build up in the inside of your water bottle. The residue is usually brown in color, feels a bit slimy. Wash with brush & water will not be able to clean it thoroughly as some areas couldn't be reached. Below is a way to clean it off thoroughly. It's Grime time 1st step If your bottle is in dried up condition, rinse it with water 1st. ![]() ![]() After rinsing with water, you'll be able to see the slimy stuff more clearly in the bottle ![]() 2nd step Add a handful of rice grains into the bottle ![]() 3rd step Fill the bottle with some water, 1/4 full. ![]() 4th step Shake the bottle hard for around 5mins to 10mins. The longer the cleaner it is ![]() Finally pour out everything and be amazed by the color of the water that you will see. ![]() After pouring out, give the bottle a final rinse before using the extremely clean water bottle. pardon me, little bit of science to explain it here./ its not from the rice-- works because of the abrasive rattling action that takes off the little things that can be either living or dead (mostly water mold). These critters stick to the surfaces and each other due to the stuff they secrete (glucopolysaccharides) which we see as the gooey stuff in bottles. uuggly color cos they mix with the cloudy water of the rice to look like diarrohea. Alternatively can use sand but then dont have the nice grain smell lor. I find sprouts in water bottles and bite valves of hydrapacks the hardest to wash. Best method for me so far is to cover the whole thing with baking soda, wet it a little (to have the cleaning reaction) and then shake, rinse after letting it sit for 30 mins. Made the mistake of using bleach many yrs back-- the next ride felt like i was drinking from the swimming pool even though the damn valve was rinsed for the n'th time. |

That's a good tip for getting slime out of your water bottle. Another thing you can do is to rinse it with vinegar as well. White vinegar kills bacteria and is good as a safe general cleaning product as well.
